Women's hairstyles 1800s. Around 1860 women began to wear chignons at the nape. The hair could even be quite fuzzy especially if hot tongs were used regularly. I did find a website that offers some photos from the mid-to-late 1800s of women and their hairstyles.

The ideal woman of the 18th century had hair that was black brown or blond particularly fashionable during Marie-Antoinettes reign. Women donned crowns of flowers or bound their hair up into silken nets or velvet hoods. In the 1880s the influence from France of straightening hair with a hot metal comb was embraced by African American women.

The defining hairstyle for Edwardian women was the pompadour. Middle partings curls and elaborate updos were commonly worn with ornamental hats. Overall womens Edwardian hairstyles had a soft fluffy and loose fluidity about them.

Narrow long brim close to the face. Strong red hair was unfashionable and generally would be dyed a different color although chestnut and strawberry blond were popular. Occasionally they curled the sides but bangs werent in fashion.

Fashion was an important part of womens lives in the Victorian period and hairstyles were an extension of their clothes revealing a lot about a persons wealth and status. Still was in fashion the Louis XIV style with great curls and the hair shoulder-length. Hairstyles in the late 1800s and 1900 tended to mimic the fashion at the time.
